Garden Ministry SODBITS: April 2013

The Asbury Garden Ministry will soon start its 12th season. Over the past 11 years, it has touched the lives of thousands in our local community as over 250,000 lbs. of fresh vegetables have been distributed to food pantries, home shelters, and meal sites (Salvation Army, Cafe on Vine, and King's Harvest). The Ministry is answering God's call stated in Isaiah 58:10 "Feed my hungry."

The following three garden plots will be gardened this year:

  • Grace plot; a .7 acre plot donated for our use by the Grace Evangelical Free Church. It is located just north of 53rd Street on Eastern Avenue behind the church's parking lot. Gardening at this site will be coordinated by myself and Chuck Stanger, a fellow member of the QC Morning Optimist Club.
  • Mt. Joy plot; a .5 acre plot (size reduced from last year) donated for our use by the QC Testing Laboratory. It is located just off of the Mt. Joy exit of Highway 61; just northwest of the River Valley Turf Implement dealership (21112 Scott Park Road) and across the highway from the BSA soccer fields. I will coordinate the gardening at this site.
  • Crossroads plot; a .2 acre plot donated for our use by the Crossroads Baptist Church. It is located by the Crossroads Church and across the highway from the Mt. Joy plot. Bob Christoffersen will coordinate the gardening at this site.

Weekly core gardening times will be scheduled at the Grace and Mt. Joy plots and announced in the church bulletin the Sunday before. For example, if core gardening times are set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday of a given week, these times will be stated in the preceding Sunday's bulletin. As we know, gardening is dependent on the weather.
